on gym etiquette and missed workouts regret
I found this article on gym etiquette and general advice from slant-6’s blog. It’s a useful reminder for all of us who have resolved to get in shape/keep fit for 2007.
I’ve been on AWOL from the local gym,
and stopped doing my workouts since October. A most inappropriate time, the -ber months being the start of the holidays in the Philippines. It’s a pat on the back that I have enough will power to not feast too much on the lechon, the beer, the pasta, and the baking I sampled. But the improvement I could have attained during this short lapse could have been much, considering I lost a hefty 15lbs within 8 months of religiously following my schedule prior to quitting.
Hmmm… time to set a new diet and exercise plan and actually sticking to it.
Hi Jun.
Being the gym addict that I am… I also regret skipping the past 2 months after a whole year of working out (even on Sundays). You see, I’ve been overweight for about 10 long years. At 5′7″, I’ve weighed about 175-180 lbs for almost a decade. I’ve promised myself to lose weight… lose weight… lose weight…! Laging pangako na napapako!
Then finally, I just went out and did it. That was Sept of 2005. I didn’t stop… I never took a day off… not even on sundays… not even during Christmas and New Year of 2005. I was even on the treadmill when my family was inside having noche buena (no sh*t!). I’m now down to 135 lbs. Yes… I lost 50 f*ckin pounds! From a size 37 waistline, I’m down to a size 27! Then last November, I burned out. I just stopped… got tired. I wanted to go back last December but said to myself, heck, I can’t go back during the holidays… it’ll be all for naught. What with all the food and parties during Christmas and New Years.
So I promised to start working out again this month. But before I get back to my old rhythm, I’ll probably have to DRAG myself to the gym for the first 2-3 weeks. Kakatamad eh.
But then again, nothing beats the feeling of looking good and knowing you look that way when you face the mirror.
Posted 1 year, 6 months agothat’s the term i’ve been looking for, burn out. sooner into my program i knew i needed to change my routine, but somehow i stuck to instruction given to me. i feared altering it might undermine my gains. i was beginning to like looking at myself in the mirror.
Posted 1 year, 6 months agoi lost my gym buddy as well, which is a rather flimsy excuse, but having him around made it easier to go.
losing 50lbs is phenomenal! ikaw na lang kaya fitness buddy ko? hehe. by the way, you might like to check out SPARKPEOPLE, lots of friendly, supportive people there. May mga Pinoy threads na sa forums. mostly women though, which is just fine if you think of it. (~:”
Well, changing your routine every now and then is actually required (preferably after 2-3 weeks of the same exercise). Your trainer should’ve given you a new routine. No prob with the fitness buddy thingy… although that really depends on how far away you are. Coz I have a gym I regularly go to here in the Mandaluyong area. A friend of mine owns the place (he also used to be a trainer at Fitness First till he put up his own). Rates are unbelievably cheap!
Sure, I’ll check out Sparkpeople. Drop by my blog sometime. Keep in touch!
Posted 1 year, 6 months agohe did change my routine every three to four weeks, but it’s all the same for me really. and there’s this monotony of having to repeat the same sets after 2 days. i’m considering other activities, maybe yield to my friends’ invitations to play badminton. i jogged on mornings for a while but i haven’t been able to do recently ‘cos it rains more often now.
Posted 1 year, 6 months agoBadminton is okay. Though it’s totally different from weight-lifting. Badminton is entirely a cardio routine. Same as riding a bike or jogging/brisk-walking. Normally, when on a weightlifting program, it is not recommended to engage in exercises that make you run or jump vigorously (i.e. basketball, badminton) since it prevents your muscles from building up mass properly. Natatagtag ika nga. One a week of badminton is fine. But if you don’t plan to go back to lifting weights, it won’t be a prob.
