Frustrated!

I called to check if 300 is already showing, as was earlier announced. I was told they had it postponed, and it’s not definite until when. Aaargh… it’s getting to be exasperating, having to wait in eager anticipation while everybody else has already seen it and given their prompt reviews.

I’m not surprised why the pirated cd/dvd tiangges here are thriving, mushrooming into the streets and delaying traffic, while the theaters are left empty (which isn’t a bad thing for those on dates, really). These theaters have closed before, temporarily, them citing that there weren’t enough audience to keep the business running. I don’t buy it. Viewers from as far as Pagadian City come to Ozamiz because they don’t have any movie house there. And people from all over the Zamboanga Peninsula and the Lanao provinces come here to do business and recreation.

So the waiting goes on. And while at it, I might as well just jump in on the hype. Here’s one kid-friendly trailer. :-)

  • I heard that 300 is too violent, too bloody.
Well, I’ll just wait for your review here. You have keen eyes on this sort of things. :-)

  • It’s violent and bloody and definitely not for kids. Some teachers (I think) and what looked like the principal brought a bunch of school kids with them (below 10 years old from the looks of it) when they watched the movie.

I guess they we’re thinking it was going to be educational since it depicts history. Or maybe they thought it was going to be a “safe” movie since it was adopted from comic books. :(

  • Well, it’s definitely not for kids or the squeamish. I saw it recently and I liked it. Incidentally, I actually saw Gerard Butler last year at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival where he was out promoting his flick “Beowulf and Grendel” last year. That movie, though… was a bit slowpaced.

  • Ting: i’m not sure if i’d still have the drive to make a review by the time i see the movie. and by then it will be passe’.

Jonas: i wonder how the kids were able to get through age check at the movie house. aren’t movie houses supposed to go by movie classification/restriction, indicating who may and may not watch?

fruityoaty: Beuwolf and Grendel seems interesting. i wonder if it’s on dvd? my high school English lit class didn’t get to finish reading it. our teacher then was too busy with her troubles with the admin, i remember. :-)

  • 300 is bloody and violent indeed… which makes the film all the more fun to watch! Tee-hee!
But seriously… Jun, I can’t believe they actually shut down the cinemas over there due to the lack of moviegoers.
DVD na lang! Although you won’t be able to see the violence in all its glory. Bummer!

  • yes, they did close temporarily before, for a few months… in 2000, i believe. and reportedly, for the reason cited above.
there are three cinemas here, (if i am to exclude one rundown theater showing soft porn. people don’t go there to watch, i suppose) and showing Star Cinema movies simultaneously with those in Manila. but when it comes to foreign flicks, they don’t seem to be updated on those that matter, blockbusters even. by the time these get here, everybody has already seen it on bootleg video.
there can’t be a lack of audience if they just are more aggressive in showing the better films, IMHO. Ozamiz is like a university town, and it’s strategically located so that people from either ends of northern Mindanao come and stay, too. for business and stuff. people come in droves at the malls. and what’s amusing is that these three cinemas are all located within a mall. so i guess it all boils down to the choice of movies they show.

  • ay junanteola .. ikaw ba taga ozamiz ? ahahayy..
